Cathedral Course Tour Print E-mail

You can see an overview map and introduction to each hole on the Cathedral Course by clicking on the bars below.

Hole 1

Hole 1A good starting hole measuring 388 yards from the back tees. Out of bounds on the left quickens the pulse a little, but a good drive, helped by the prevailing South West wind will catch the slope and leave you within 150 yards of the green. Beware of the stream right in front of the green, which catches many over-ambitious approach shots. A tee shot to the right of the fairway will make a lay-up short of the stream a necessity, and if you're feeling a little rusty, may be the safest way to play the hole.

Hole 2

Hole 2The second is the first opportunity to break out the driver and let rip. A tee shot down the left side of the fairway will help take the green-side trap and lake out of play but a 50 yard long trap up the left side of the fairway will keep you focused. At 435 yards, this is the longest par 4 on the course, for the men, but a shortish par 5 at 412 yards for the ladies.

Hole 3

Hole 3A creek and trees to the right side of the fairway, direct play down the left side, where accuracy rather than distance is the key. A 200 yard plus tee shot will leave 150 yards to the green. Only the biggest hitters will be troubled by the fairway bunker, but many an approach shot has found its way into the fairway trap, some 30 yards short of the green, as it looks to be green-side.

Hole 4

Hole 4The first of the par 3's and longest at 167 yards. A lake and sand trap bordered by Portland stone, guards the front edge of the green and the Rife awaits anything to the left. Take plenty of club as this hole is often into the wind and long is preferable to short!

Hole 5

Hole 5Known locally as "The Mother", this 601 yard par 5 is one to rival the famous Blue Monster at Doral. Often a par 5 represents a birdie opportunity for the big hitter, in five years, this green has only been hit in two shots on a handful of occasions and bogey is a more than acceptable score.

For the higher handicapper playing the hole as a par 6, will probably result in a lower score than trying to hit this water lined hole in regulation.

Hole 6

cc06After the trials and tribulations of the 5th, you now get a short reprieve on the par 3 sixth. A generous green affords a good target provided the water doesn't attract your attention on the tee. Play to the right side of the green for safety and take enough club, as the green falls away quite steeply into the lake at the front.

Hole 7

Hole 7A good tee shot is essential on this thinking man's par 4. An aggressive tee shot up the right side, cutting across the Rife will shorten the hole, put you in the widest part of the fairway and leave a good view of the green. A tee shot up the left will flirt with the 60 yard long trap and necessitate a lay up.

A shorter tee shot to the right side of the fairway will also afford a safer approach by playing up the right side of the double fairway. This route does bring the right hand trap into play, but there is plenty of room to run the ball up onto the nearly 40 yard long green.

Hole 8

Hole 8The second longest par 5 on the course at 566 yards, but eminently more reachable than the fifth. Another chance to take driver but accuracy is key with out of bounds on the left and a 100 yard long trap up the landing area on the right. A good drive and an ambitious second cutting the right dog-leg can make the green in two, but a more conservative three shot approach, will take the trees up the right and the right hand green side trap out of play and still afford the possibility of a birdie.

Hole 9

Hole 9An interesting risk reward hole due to a very tight landing area off the tee. To take the left hand trap out of play you must fly your drive over 230 yards and if it strays right the centre trap will catch you. This can just leave a short iron to the relatively open green. The other way to play the hole is to lay up off the tee short of the central trap, leaving 180 yards into the green.

Hole 10

Hole 10The easiest hole on the course and for the bigger hitters a chance to try to cut the corner and run the ball up close to the green. Out of bounds up the right requires a left side tee shot to both shorten the hole and avoid the danger. A long unguarded green awaits, but anything to the right will be wet.

Hole 11

Hole 11A tee shot up the right side of the fairway will open the green up and a well hit driver should take the right side trap out of play. Taking plenty of club into the green will ensure the two traps to the front of the green are taken out of play and set up a perfect birdie opportunity.

Hole 12

Hole 12The shortest of the par 5's may tempt you to go for the green in two. Keep the ball up the left side off the tee to provide a good view of the green, which also steers you well clear of the tree lined creek. The lake is some 40 yards short of the green so there is a reasonable margin for error when going for the green and the right hand green-side trap is not usually a factor. If laying up, again keep the ball left to avoid having the trees blocking you out.

Hole 13

Hole 13An interesting par 3, with water to the left of the green. Pin placement here will determine your shot to the 40 yard long green, which is a three club variance front to back. The widest part of the green is toward the back and a shot here will take the water out of play. However, a front pin placement will leave a tricky down-hill putt for birdie.

Hole 14

Hole 14Another chance to pull out the driver on this, one of the easier holes on the course. Out of bounds down the left side of the fairway is the only big danger, but a drive down the left side of the fairway will afford an easier approach.

The green is unguarded and club selection is key to this two tier 40 yard green, with the second tier falling away from you. The safer side to miss the green is to the right, but will leave a tricky down-hill chip from the first cut of rough.

Hole 15

Hole 15The signature hole of the Cathedral course, is the shortest par 3 and is the first of three holes making up "Amen Corner". The only place to land is on the green, with water and traps virtually surrounding the green. A par here will set you up nicely for the next two holes.

Hole 16

Hole 16A very driveable par 4, which can yield anything from an easy birdie for the adventurous to a double bogey, on this water lined hole. The landing area for most drives is the narrowest part of the fairway, unless you can clear 220 yards off the back tees. The more cautious approach is to pull out a mid to long iron and aim for the widest part of the fairway, which will leave between 100 and 120 yards to the pin. The green is unbunkered thus affording a good birdie opportunity, even for the more conservatively minded.

Hole 17

Hole 17Each shot on this 298 yard par 4 must be carefully selected, with out of bounds up the right hand side and a water hazard up the left. The fairway slopes toward the centre of the fairway from the out of bounds, but anything to the left will either be in deep rough or the lake. The approach shot is equally hazardous, with a pond to the left of a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the rear upper tier it will take something special to get your approach close, but a miss to the right is not the end of the world.

Hole 18

Hole 18A 400 yard par 4 dog-leg left, which plays longer than its distance, up the hill to the club house. A drive should favour the right side of the fairway, avoiding the fairway trap and provide a better view of the green. This will make the hole play a little longer, but will avoid an all too common encounter with the trees up the left. A front left trap guards against anyone cutting the corner and take plenty of club on your approach to hit the widest portion of the green.
